PITTSBURGH: AstraZeneca's prescription drug Nexium has been on the market for several years, but the drug has yet to be approved by the Food and Drug Administration for a generic version, a new study shows.
Nexium, produced by AstraZeneca, is available in generic form and is the generic version of Prilosec, which was launched in 2003.
The study, which involved over 15,000 patients, shows Nexium had a 40 percent longer duration of effect than the generic Prilosec and was not significantly different from the brand-name product in terms of duration of action and side effects.

The study, published in the April issue of theJournal of the American Medical Association, will examine the long-term effects of Nexium on a number of patients. The researchers found that the drug had a greater than 8-hour effect on most patients.
